Angelita de Valtuille

A wine made in memory of our grandmother Angelita, a pioneer in looking after and expanding the family vineyards in Valtuille de Abajo.

It is an allegory of spring, with the colours of the almond blossom, the first to flower, just as this is one of the first wines made in the area thanks to the early ripening of Chardonnay in its site.

The vineyard

Angelita comes from a Chardonnay plot trained on wires, planted by the family in 1994 on river-stone and clay soils, at 900 metres above sea level and facing east. Yields are very low, with very small bunches, so concentration and ripeness are high.

Winemaking

The 100% Chardonnay grapes are harvested by hand in early September, selected in the vineyard, in 20 kg crates.

On arrival at the winery, the grapes are destemmed over the press and immediately pressed by hand, with a must yield of around 60%. The must is cold-settled for 24 hours, then decanted and racked, ready for fermentation.

Fermentation begins in stainless steel and, once stable, the wine is moved into used 225-litre French oak barrels to finish its alcoholic fermentation. During ageing the lees are stirred regularly, giving structure and body. After 12 months in barrel it is fined and bottled.

Tasting notes

  • Pale yellow with golden highlights.
  • Particularly complex on the nose: fresh fruit (apple and pear), citrus (grapefruit), caramel, bakery notes and herbal touches (fennel). With air, floral acacia aromas appear.
  • Unctuous on the palate, medium-bodied, with a pleasant, lingering bitterness and moderate acidity. Sweet notes and a fresh finish where the fresh fruit is always present.
