Who are we?
We created VinosLOF as a family project that began when our generation, the López and Folgueral generation (the surnames behind the project's initials), decided to focus on producing quality wines from the family vineyards.
Our vineyards are mainly in Valtuille de Abajo. Most of them are over 80 years old and were planted with local varieties by our grandparents and great-grandparents. Our parents, where the project began, mainly sold grapes to other wineries and looked after and expanded the vineyards through new plantings, purchases and exchanges of plots.
In recent years we have restored our grandfather's small family winery, built in the traditional style, as well as a historic winery in the village, the Penoselo family winery.
Our vineyards
The LOF family works exclusively with its own vineyards, mostly in Valtuille de Abajo, although a significant part of them is in Villalibre de la Jurisdicción.
Like most vineyards in El Bierzo, ours are living treasures because of their age: the oldest were planted between 1900 and 1940. The new generations carry on the family legacy and have also planted some new vineyards.
In Valtuille they are small plots spread across different sites in the heart of the village, with different altitudes, orientations and soils: Villegas, Mata los Pardos, Coutadín or Olivar, El Couso, El Pedregal, La Mata, San Pelagio, El Argadete and Los Chaos.
The Villalibre project
Since 2018 we have been restoring abandoned vineyards in a mountainous area in the south of El Bierzo, at altitudes close to 700 metres above sea level.
The Villalibre vineyards, mostly planted in the first decade of the 20th century, suffered greatly from abandonment because of the small size of the plots, the age of their owners and the difficulty of working slopes with an average gradient of 32%.
We have kept the original old vines wherever possible and replanted where they had died. In the original plots we have grafted Godello onto the old vines, along with nearly extinct native varieties such as Estaladiña and Merenzao.
What are our wines like?
We farm organically: ploughing, cover crops and gentle treatments that preserve biodiversity and let us make the most of native yeasts and bacteria. All vineyard work is done by hand, from pruning to harvest, and we harvest plot by plot so that each wine expresses its soil, altitude and age.
In the winery we work by hand and with minimal intervention. We do not give up sulphites, but we keep additions to a minimum, aiming for clean, elegant wines with good ageing potential.
